Symbology guide

Which barcode type should you use?

Every barcode format was designed for a specific job — shipping, retail checkout, mail sorting, or smartphone scanning. Here's a quick breakdown of each category this generator supports.

1D · Linear

Linear codes

Code 128, Code 39, Code 93, Interleaved 2 of 5, Codabar, MSI, and Pharmacode are the workhorses of warehousing, inventory tags, and internal asset tracking, where any standard scanner can read them.

Mail sorting

Postal codes

PostNet, Planet, Royal Mail 4-State, KIX, Japan Post, and Australia Post encode address and routing data so mail-sorting machines can read envelopes and parcels automatically.

Supply chain

GS1 DataBar & GS1-128

Used across logistics and grocery supply chains to encode product identifiers, batch numbers, weights, and expiry dates in a single compact, globally standardized symbol.

Retail checkout

EAN & UPC

EAN-8, EAN-13, UPC-A, and UPC-E are the codes printed on almost every retail product worldwide — what gets scanned at the till and matched to a product listing.

2D matrix

QR, Data Matrix, PDF417, Aztec

These store far more data than a linear code in a small square footprint, and are scannable with any smartphone camera — ideal for marketing, tickets, and labels.

Publishing

ISBN & ISSN

Standard identifiers for books and periodicals, printed on covers and barcoded for bookstore and library checkout systems worldwide.

Pharma

PZN8

The German pharmaceutical central number format used on medicine packaging across Germany's healthcare and pharmacy supply chain.

Smart payload

vCard & MeCard QR

Encodes a full contact card — name, phone, email, organization — into one scannable code so people can save your details with a single tap.

Smart payload

Wi-Fi, URL, Phone & SMS QR

Builds a formatted connection string for a network, web page, phone call, or pre-filled text message, so scanning the code performs the action instantly.

Who this is for

Barcodes and QR codes for local businesses

Whether you're tagging shelf stock or printing a table-top menu code, the right barcode makes your business easier to scan, find, and trust.

Shops & retailers

Generate EAN-13 or UPC-A codes for product labels and price tags, or a Code 128 code for internal stock-room tracking. If you run a retail shop, pair your barcoded inventory with a free listing on Listrohub's business directory so local shoppers can find you online too.

Restaurants & cafés

A QR Code — URL pointing to your digital menu or online ordering page works well on table tents and window decals. Browse other restaurants and food businesses already listed on Listrohub for ideas on presenting your profile.

Pharmacies & clinics

Use PZN8 or GS1-128 codes for medicine packaging and stock control, and a vCard QR Code on prescriptions or appointment cards so patients can save your clinic's contact details instantly.

Cafés, salons & coworking spaces

A Wi-Fi QR Code lets customers join your network without typing a password — print it next to the till or on a table card for a small, practical service upgrade.

Publishers, authors & libraries

ISBN-13 and ISSN barcodes are required for retail and library distribution of books and periodicals, and can be generated here in print-ready PNG or SVG format.

Service providers & freelancers

Put a vCard or MeCard QR Code on your business card or storefront window so people can save your number, email, and company name in one scan. Once you're set up, list your service under Listrohub's professional services category to reach more local customers.

FAQ

Common questions

Is this barcode generator really free to use?
Yes. There's no account, watermark, or download limit — generate as many barcodes as you need in PNG or SVG format at no cost.
What's the difference between a 1D barcode and a 2D code like a QR code?
A 1D (linear) barcode encodes data in a single row of parallel lines and typically holds a short numeric or alphanumeric value, like a product number. A 2D code, such as a QR Code or Data Matrix, encodes data in a grid pattern and can hold far more information — entire URLs, contact cards, or Wi-Fi credentials — while staying scannable from a smartphone camera.
Which barcode type should I use for retail products?
Use EAN-13 for most international retail products, UPC-A for products sold primarily in the US and Canada, or EAN-8/UPC-E for small packaging where space is limited. If you're working within a supply chain that requires batch or lot tracking, GS1-128 is the better fit.
Can I create a QR code that connects people to my Wi-Fi automatically?
Yes — select "QR Code Wi-Fi" from the Wi-Fi Barcodes group, enter your network name, password, and authentication type, and the generator builds a scannable code that joins the device to your network with no manual typing.
Should I download my barcode as PNG or SVG?
PNG is a fixed-resolution image, fine for screens, documents, and most everyday uses. SVG is a vector format that scales to any size without losing sharpness, so it's the better choice for printing on packaging, signage, or large-format materials.
Do generated barcodes work with standard scanners?
Yes. Each symbology follows its published industry specification, so barcodes generated here are readable by standard retail, warehouse, postal, and smartphone scanners that support that format.
Good to know
  • EAN-8 needs 7-8 digits, EAN-13 needs 12-13 digits, UPC-A needs 11-12 digits.
  • Postal codes are length-sensitive numeric/alphanumeric formats — check your postal authority's spec before printing at scale.
  • "Smart payload" types (vCard, Wi-Fi, URL, Phone, SMS) build a formatted text string and encode it as QR/Data Matrix — no special library needed on the scanning end.
  • Not included (require dedicated proprietary encoders, available on request): Swiss QR Bill, ZATCA e-invoicing QR, HIBC LIC/PAS, MaxiCode, Royal Mail Mailmark 2D, DPD parcel label, GS1 Digital Link.
